Andrew Garfield May Not Return in 'The Amazing Spider-Man 4'

While the recently debuted trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 clearly sets up a big picture that has been rumored to lead to a gathering of The Sinister Six in The Amazing Spider-Man 4, there's one integral part that isn't yet confirmed for the sequel already slated to arrive in 2018. While speaking with Yahoo UK recently, rebooted Peter Parker player Andrew Garfield revealed that he's not yet signed for a fourth film as the webslinger.

Garfield says,
"I’m under contract for another one after this. As far as a fourth one? That's not anything to do with me." So Sony decided to slate a sequel for 2018 without confirming their lead actor.
Now it's unlikely that Sony Pictures won't be able to sign Garfield for a fourth film, especially since Garfield says, "I think what we’re doing here is we've established the world. And now we get to really play inside that world." So why wouldn't he want to play with all the bad guys in this big sandbox that really takes off next summer? Well, for an actor, eight years is a lot of time to spend playing one character. Plus, 2018 is still five years away, and there's plenty of other projects Garfield would like to do in the future.

This opens up the possibility of finally making these comic book hero roles interchangeable like James Bond. Is there any way we can keep these franchises alive without having to reboot them? James Bond has lasted decades and they've only rebooted his origin story once, and it wasn't even necessary (though it was cool). Maybe it's time for heroes like Batman, Iron Man and Spider-Man to head down that path where different actors can step in and out of the role without having to shake everything up, especially since these characters are now very familiar and don't need to be introduced to audiences all over again. The only issue is that these new world-building franchises make that slightly more difficult, but not impossible.
