Peter Jackson Still Plans to Direct 'Tintin' Sequel After 'The Hobbit' Trilogy is Finished

Last February we learned that Peter Jackson was still planning on directing the sequel to The Adventures of Tintin, which he produced with Steven Spielberg, the director of the first film. Jackson said he would tackle the sequel after he was completely finished with The Hobbit trilogy and almost exactly a year ago, Jackson said he was hoping to get the motion-capture animated film into theaters in 2015. Jackson was again asked about the return of Tintin as he made the rounds for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (hitting theaters this week), and he reiterated the sequel is coming after The Hobbit is all finished.

Here's what Jackson told Bad Taste (via ComingSoon):

"As soon as I'm free of 'The Hobbit,' I'll be going back into doing 'Tintin.' It was held up by The Hobbit, but we have every intention of doing another Tintin movie and it's just waiting on me to be done with these 'Hobbit' movies."

Now that there's a bloodbath of blockbusters set for 2015, we're betting that Jackson might not have the same release plan. After all, he still has one more film in The Hobbit trilogy to release late in 2014, so he'll probably be working in post-production on that well into next year. It seems more likely that a sequel to The Adventures of Tintin would arrive in 2016 instead. After all, the first film wasn't a runaway hit in the United States (it did better internationally), but a film from Spielberg and Jackson still has an audience.

As for what kind of story we'll see this time, last we heard from producer Kathleen Kennedy was the sequel would be based on The Calculus Affair. Other rumors have pegged Seven Crystal Balls and Prisoners of the Sun as the inspiration for the sequel. Either way, Spielberg previously has said, "We have completed a story outline now. We have a writer on it. I’m just not declaring what it is. It will be more than one book, but no more than two." We'll see just how soon a Tintin sequel gets off the ground, but we'll likely be waiting awhile before any real updates come through. Do you still want an Adventures of Tintin sequel?
