Review: 'The Expendables 3'

PLOT: The Expendables find themselves up against another worthy opponent, only this time it's personal: a former member of the outfit is selling bombs to terrorists and laughing in the face of his old friends. In order to tackle the deadly threat, Barney Ross finds it necessary to recruit a crew of younger members to assist in taking down the arch-villain.

REVIEW: Even by the standards of this particular series, The Expendables 3 is barely a movie. Sylvester Stallone has been the chief creative force for this trilogy, action dream teams that combine the forces of some of the starrier bottom-kickers in cinematic history. And each time he's opted for a chummy get-together that celebrates yesterday instead of getting down to the basics of telling a story or presenting compelling, three-dimensional characters. More importantly, for being called “expendable”, this is a rather bulletproof group of older men – you've never seen so many people run straight into gunfire and pick up no more than a minor bruise. The result carries the suspense of watching someone sign a check.

Stallone's Barney Ross is so sentimental about his team that he refuses to lead them into what seems to be a suicide mission against former Expendable Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson). So, in a franchise that's all about uniting the past action stars of yesteryear and giving them a chance to shine, fans are being asked to pay for a movie where they all get replaced by Kellan Lutz.

Even if it's not the action lineup fans expected, the core group of Expendables deserves better than three movies of being marginalized. The interplay between Ross and Jason Statham's Lee Christmas is creaky, but fueled by a genuine chemistry. Dolph Lundgren's Gunnar Hansen is still the bizarre, murderous savant, Randy Couture's Toll Road is still an irritable old man brawler, and Terry Crews, sweet sweet Terry Crews, remains the life of the party. If you're hoping to hear more from them, fat chance: they all have even less to do this time around, and poor Crews only shows up for the first and third acts.

At least Crews has the excuse of probably popping up in five more movies this month. That wasn't the case for Bruce Willis, who famously backed out due to a flimsy paycheck. Stepping into the role of demanding CIA boss is Harrison Ford's Max Drummer. His whole deal is basically to serve the same purpose that Willis' Church would have, as if they wrote around Willis' absence by crossing out CHURCH and replacing it with DRUMMER. There's a third act action scene where the crew receives back-up from Drummer's helicopter, with Arnold Schwarzenegger's Trench and Jet Li's Yin, but they might as well have stayed in their hotel room, superimposed on the bodies of stunt doubles who stay seated, firing guns.

But most people interested in The Expendables 3 know that we're dealing with a glorified roll call of actors tossing around funny quips and firing weapons at everyone and no one in particular. It's the level of which the second film worked: the first carried the burden of an uninspiring baddie, and a certain, possibly budget-dictated smallness. Part two, however, successfully delegated enough standout sequences for specific actors, allowing Jean-Claude Van Damme a chance to chew scenery, and amusingly adding to the Chuck Norris myth.

So you could make this work: does director Patrick Hughes pull it off? To answer in the affirmative would be overly generous: The Expendables 3 feels neutered by the PG-13 rating, turning its action moments into bloodless, weightless scrums where anything worse than a single random bloodless bullet earns a cutaway. There are several characters to follow, and none of the non-fight blocking makes any sense. One early slugfest involving MMA fighter Ronda Rousey seems to go the extra mile in making it look like she cannot actually fight. Most of the film genuinely feels visually out-of-focus, blurry and grainy for no artistic reason. The explosions are computer generated, and they look awful: you'll be hard-pressed to find worse effects in a movie this year.

It's hard to find nice things to say about the film's endless parade of introductions. When Ross and friend Bonaparte (Kelsey Grammer) meet with potential new recruits, the various “auditions” are an endless parade of flailing limbs as Stallone watches, nonplussed. Stallone's face has hardened to the point where physical expression is so limited you'll never have any clue what emotions he's trying to project. The new recruits he fingers reek of Poochie-style edge: the nondescript hacker played by Glen Powell is jumping off cliffs and parachuting down. Cute, pug-nosed Tito Ortiz knows his heavy artillery. The stunning Rousey, who has an absolutely knockout smile as well as a knockout punch, uses her hips like WMD's. Poor Kellan Lutz bears the brunt of the weight in this empty side-ensemble: by having this soft crew almost immediately kidnapped and held as bait, Stallone and co-writers Creighton Rotherberger and Katrin Benedikt seem to be suggesting that Hollywood tries to groom the next big action star by setting them up to obviously fail over and over again, as Lutz has more than a few times lately.

Thankfully, The Expendables 3 raises the action bar so well that it can't help but be the most fun of the series. It's action porn with minimal story and even less development of its characters. You wouldn't expect much story in an Expendables movie, and you would never be disappointed. What you would expect are your favorite action stars blowing away bad guys bloodlessly and walking away from gigantic explosions, preferably in slow motion. It's impossible to say this latest entry disappoints. As has become common in the franchise The Expendables 3 doesn't try for much, and it succeeds.

Jason Statham Virtually Died While Shoot 'Expendables 3'

Production on The Expendables 3 began last month in Bulgaria with director Patrick Hughes at the helm. We've seen a photo from the set with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Harrison Ford and the paparazzi has landed some shots of the rest of the cast, but we won't post them here. What we will post, however, is a story from cast member Terry Crews who talks about a supposed near-death experience. However, as he tells the story, it's clear that it's really Jason Statham who actually almost died while filming the sequel. Basically some faulty brakes on a truck resulted in Statham driving straight into the Black Sea. Watch now!

Here's the interview from "The Tonight Show" with Terry Crews telling the story via Movies.com:

The Expendables 3 is directed by Patrick Hughes and written by Sylvester Stallone and Olympus Has Fallen scribes Creighton Rothenberger & Katrin Benedikt. Barney (Sylvester Stallone), Christmas (Jason Statham) and the rest of the team comes face-to-face with Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson), who years ago co-founded The Expendables with Barney. Stonebanks subsequently became a ruthless arms trader and someone who Barney was forced to kill...or so he thought. Stonebanks, who eluded death once before, now is making it his mission to end The Expendables, but Barney has other plans with a new era of Expendables team members, younger, faster and more tech-savvy. The film arrives on August 15th, 2014.

Jason Statham Will Return In 'The Mechanic 2' But Won't Star In 'Transporter 4'

With three films in The Transporter series (not to mention two ridiculous Crank films and The Expendables franchise), British action star Jason Statham is no stranger to sequels. However, it appears four films is just too much for the actor to reprise his role as driver Frank Martin. THR has word that Luc Besson and his EuropaCorp banner is moving forward with a fourth film in The Transporters franchise as a Chinese co-production with Mark Gao and his Fundamental Films company in Shanghai. But Statham will not return, because the film will serve as a reboot focusing on Frank's origin story this time. More below!

In addition, if the film performs as well as producers hope, a fifth and sixth installment following the younger version of the character will be planned. The reboot is on sale right now at the European Film Market. While The Transporter films were never anything beyond ridiculous action fun, it's annoying to see the series go the boring way of so many other franchises that begin to run long by crafting a prequel following the mysterious character's origins. However, fans of Statham might be happy to hear that another one of his characters will make a return.

Another report from THR says German director Dennis Gansel has been hired to direct The Mechanic 2, a sequel to the 2011 action thriller which starred Statham as Arthur Bishop, an elite assassin with a talent for cleanly killing targets, often making it look like an accidental death and with a strict code of conduct. This will be the first production Gansel has taken on in the United States after directing hit films in Germany like Before the Fall, The Wave and The Fourth State, making him one of Germany's most popular directors. It's not clear if Ben Foster will return, but we're sure fans will be fine since Statham is involved.

Katee Sackhoff Joins Gina Carano in All-Female 'Expendables' Flick

Following her work on "Battlestar Galactica," actress Katee Sackhoff has been a part of some film projects like Sexy Evil Genius and Riddick, but those films aren't hitting the big screen very soon. However, we might see her in action sometime soon as Variety reports Sackhoff has been lined up to join Gina Carano in the all-female take on The Expendables from The Grey and Dredd 3D producer Adi Shankar. The producer commented, "If you spend five minutes with Katee it becomes blatantly obvious that she would pwn most male action stars." That's all well and good, but when are we going to get big names on this film?

Variety says several prominent female action stars are still circling the project, but no names are mentioned this time either. Carano and Sackhoff are certainly tough women, but this film is going to need some big names to be a worthy riff on The Expendables. Obviously, the testosterone fueled action bonanza doesn't have only all-star action stars, but there need to be at least a few. Again, our choices include Sigourney Weaver, Milla Jovovich, Kate Beckinsale, Michelle Rodriguez, Lucy Lawless, Linda Hamilton, Uma Thurman, Zoe Saldana and Michelle Yeoh, so hopefully at least some of them join the flick.

Sylvester Stallone joins indie drama 'Reach Me'

Sylvester Stallone has had a pretty impressive comeback in recent years. The Rocky and Rambo star was once one of the biggest actors in the world, but despite his box office successes through the 80s and 90s, he was relegated to straight-to-DVD work like Eye See You, Shade, and Avenging Angelo for much of the 2000s. After resurrecting his iconic characters and getting the gang back together for The Expendables, Stallone seems to have a second chance at being a megastar again, but that doesn't mean he'll only be doing blockbusters. Variety reports that Sly has joined Reach Me, an indie drama for director John Herzfeld.

The film tells the story of a collection of people who have a connection with a self-help book written by a secretive and reclusive former football coach and stars rapper-turned-actor Nelly, Elizabeth Henstridge (who has just been cast in Joss Whedon's "S.H.I.E.L.D." TV show for ABC), Danny Aiello, Omari Hardwick, and Rebekah Chaney. Stallone just finished filming a few days on the movie, but Variety isn't sure which role he played. The reclusive coach, perhaps? We'll have to wait and see.

Herzfeld, who actually starred alongside Stallone in the 1986 action film Cobra, has directed films like 2 Days in the Valley and 15 Minutes, and he wrote and is directing Reach Me. It'll be interesting to see Stallone break out his dramatic chops again outside of the action genre, since the last time he did that with any real success was 1997's Cop Land, which wasn't particularly well received upon release but has earned its supporters in the ensuing years. Thoughts?

Watch: Trailer for David Ayer's 'Sabotage' Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger

Following first look images, we now have the first trailer for the action thriller Sabotage starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. The film from End of Watch director features an ensemble cast, but unlike The Expendables, this one looks to be a little more grounded and features an interesting assemble of talent like Joe Manganiello, Sam Worthington, Harold Perrineau, Terrence Howard, Josh Holloway, Olivia Williams and Mireille Enos (the latter looking like a perfect fit for The ExpendaBelles). This looks pretty decent, and Worthington has one hell of a braided beard. Watch below!

Here's the first trailer for David Ayer's Sabotage, originally from Yahoo:

Sabotage is directed by David Ayer and written by Skip Woods (A Good Day to Die Hard, The A-Team). Two Legends Prepared to Bust Out in 'Escape Plan' International Posters

After teaming up in The Expendables 2, action fans are surely excited to see Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger back together again as they try to bust out of the most secure prison ever built in Escape Plan. We've already seen a trailer with Stallone and Schwarzenegger doing what they do best, and now two international posters have showed up featuring the meathead duo. One is certainly reminiscent of face off with a poorly done blend in the middle while the other features the stars in the cells of this unique prison. However, we're not sure how they got those big guns on the inside without raising some eyebrows.

Here are the two international posters for Mikael Håfström's Escape Plan from IMP Awards:

Escape Plan is directed by Mikael Håfström (1408, Shanghai) & written by Miles Chapman. Ray Breslin (Stallone), the world's foremost authority on structural security, agrees to take on one last job: breaking out of an ultra-secret, high-tech facility called 'The Tomb.' But when he is wrongly imprisoned, he must recruit fellow inmate Emil Rottmayer (Arnold Schwarzenegger) to help devise a daring, nearly impossible plan to escape from the most protected and fortified prison ever built. Jim Caviezel, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, Vinnie Jones, Vincent D'Onofrio & Amy Ryan also star in the film which Summit releases on October 18th.
