At the end of the summer, there was a rumor going around that Universal Pictures wanted director Paul Greengrass and star Matt Damon to return to the action franchise that started with The Bourne Identity and has now spun-off into The Bourne Legacy starring Jeremy Renner. That rumor turned out to be false, but now the studio has found a director for the next sequel in the expanding Jason Bourne universe as Deadline reports Fast & Furious franchise director Justin Lin has been hired to take over Bourne for Universal. It's not surprising considering the bang-up job he did revitalizing a series that seemed to be tired.
The question is what will happen in the story. Will we merely continue the story that follows Jeremy Renner's Aaron Cross character, or will Universal be able to coerce Damon into returning in some capacity for some kind of team-up, or even possibly a face-off? Either way, Universal is keen on keeping their limited franchises alive since other filmmaking endeavors seemed to have fallen flat. Here's hoping The Mummy and Jurassic World work out for the studio, or they're going to need to dig a bit deeper in order to get some fresh properties off the ground. Thoughts?
